Design Description

The composition centres on Li Shizhen, presenting the original content of Ben Cao Gang Mu (Compendium of Materia Medica) and highlighting its systematic organisation and status as a monumental work of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The composition simultaneously integrates Zhang Jingyue’s Jingyue Quanshu (Complete Works of Jingyue) and his concept of the si wei (four pillars) among medicinals, Yang Jizhou’s Zhenjiu Dacheng (Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) with its illustrations, and Wu Youke’s representative formula Dayuan Yin (Decoction to Reach the Membrane Source), showcasing the diversity and depth of Ming Dynasty medical theory. The right side of the composition depicts the scene of Zheng He’s voyages to the Western Seas, featuring sailing fleets, exotic landscapes, and scenes of medical exchange. It illustrates the transmission of Chinese medicine to overseas regions and symbolises the cross-regional influence and cultural openness fostered through its spread along the Maritime Silk Road.
