Design Description

The composition is set against the Taiyishu (Imperial Medical Office) of the Tang Dynasty, showcasing the flourishing of Chinese medicine and materia medica culture. Sun Simiao’s Dayi Jingcheng (On the Absolute Sincerity of Great Physicians) remains to this day an essential text guiding physicians in medical ethics. His Beiji Qianjin Yaofang (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand in Gold for Emergencies) and Qianjin Yifang (Supplement to the Prescriptions Worth a Thousand in Gold), hailed as the first medical encyclopaedia, embody his benevolence and scholarly contribution. Chao Yuanfang presents his Zhubing Yuanhou Lun (General Treatise on the Causes and Manifestations of Various Diseases), highlighting its systematic summary of disease causes and manifestations and its contribution to the development of aetiology. The scene of Jianzhen’s eastward voyage carrying medical texts symbolises the overseas dissemination of Chinese medicine knowledge and cultural exchange, reflecting the Tang Dynasty’s achievements in the overseas transmission of Chinese medicine. The overall composition integrates architecture, figures, and classical texts, emphasising the close integration of medical development and humanistic spirit during the Sui and Tang periods.
