Design Description

The work presents Sihai Huayi Zongtu (Complete Map of Chinese and Foreign Lands) in mosaic form, symbolising the ancients’ holistic understanding of heaven, earth and all things, as well as their philosophical thinking. Through the combination of countless small units, a complete image is constructed, embodying the concept that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts” and echoing the holistic view emphasised in traditional Chinese medicine, namely “tian ren he yi (man-nature unity) and the unity of all things”.

Sihai Huayi Zongtu (Complete Map of Chinese and Foreign Lands) is an important geographical atlas compiled in later generations, demonstrating the ancients’ understanding of “all under heaven”. In particular, “Hua” refers to the Central Plains, whilst “Yi” broadly denotes the surrounding peoples. The map encompasses the territory of ancient China and its neighbouring states, possessing significant historical and geographical value.

The work is installed on the side wall at the escalator entrance, continuing the design language of “dynamic balance of qi’s ascent and descent” on the elevator wall. It integrates the concrete image of the map with abstract philosophy, creating a public art space that combines historical depth with a sense of vitality.
