Design Description

This garden entrance corridor takes “bianzheng (pattern identification)” as its theme, presenting the core traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) approach to diagnosing disease. Through comprehensive analysis of the four diagnostic methods, namely “inspection”, “auscultation and olfaction”, “inquiry”, and “palpation”, the cause and mechanism of illness are inferred, leading to targeted treatment. The corridor design echoes this concept: looking towards the garden wall from the passage, visitors see a relief inscription of the four characters “wang (inspection)”, “wen (auscultation and olfaction)”, “wen (inquiry)” and “qie (palpation)” rendered in Wei-style regular script by calligraphers of the Hong Kong Calligraphers’ Association, expressing the fundamental framework of TCM diagnosis. The overall design interprets traditional medical wisdom through contemporary spatial language, creating an experiential atmosphere where stillness and movement, interior and exterior, resonate with one another.
