Design Description

This sculpture deconstructs and reassembles the core concepts of “inspection, auscultation and olfaction, inquiry, and palpation” (the four diagnostic methods) and “medicine”, rendered in small seal script, symbolising the deep integration of traditional knowledge with modern medicine.

The sculpture takes the form of a gourd, which has been a symbol of traditional Chinese medicine since ancient times, embodying the ideal of “hanging the gourd to heal the world”. This design conveys the spirit of Chinese medicine in saving lives, healing the wounded, and benefiting society.

The base of the sculpture presents the outline of a world map, connecting the sculpture to the ground. This not only enhances the sculpture’s stability but also expresses the idea of “medical convergence and engagement with the world”. It symbolises Hong Kong’s role as a window connecting with the world, strengthening ties with the globe and highlighting its significance as a bridge for global culture and medicine.

The interior design of the sculpture incorporates elements of the earth’s latitude and longitude lines, further emphasising cultural and medical exchange between the Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong, the public, and the world, showcasing Chinese medicine culture from a global perspective.
